Worst Ways to Start a Conversation

June 19, 2011

Don't start with that!

We’ve all heard them. Some of us have said them.

They’re bad ways to start a conversation. These opening lines instantly put us on edge, signalling to the listener that nothing good will come of this particular chat.

Not to brag or anything, but… these “Top Ten” worst converstaion openers have been gathered from a lifetime of painful observation.

  1. Don’t take this the wrong way.
  2. Now, don’t get upset.
  3. I hate to be the one to tell you this.
  4. Not to take anything away from you, but…
  5. We can be honest with each other, right?
  6. I’m telling you this as a friend.
  7. We have to talk.
  8. If you asked me…
  9. Let me explain something to you.
  10. Not to be ignorant or anything, but…
  11. You know what your problem is?

or how about worse things a doctor can say:

    – “oops”
    – “that’s not good…”
    – “uh-oh”
    – “i’ll be right back…” (in the middle of an exam)
    – “can you hold this…” (in the middle of an exam)

haha – check out my “how to (not) win friends…” blog…i’ll probably make your list of worst conversationalists *hahah*
